BENICAR Lawsuit Lawyers In Central NY

Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers of a possible link with olmesartan medoxomil, or Benicar, to gastrointestinal injury. Those who have suffered from Benicar side effects have filed for a lawsuit against its manufacturer, Daiichi Sankyo.

Daiichi Sankyo spent approximately $1 billion promoting their drugs Benicar and Benicar HCT between 2002 and 2008. The manufacturer claimed Benicar was the safest and most effective drug in its class of angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). However, no other medications in its class have been found to cause intestinal problems such as sprue-like enteropathy. Now, Daiichi Sankyo is facing a Benicar lawsuit.

Daiichi Sankyo originally developed the drug Benicar to treat high blood pressure. After being approved by the FDA in 2002, Benicar grew in popularity. Today, physicians write more than 11 million Benicar prescriptions per year.

Benicar works because its main ingredient, olmesartan medoxomil keeps blood vessels open, lowering the body’s blood pressure. The medication can be both used alone or in combination with other drugs. Benicar HCT has the same ingredients as Benicar but also includes a second medication that lowers water content, as retaining too much water can raise your blood pressure.

Benicar belongs in the ARB class, also known as angiotensin II receptor blockers. Angiotensin II is a natural protein made by the human body that influences the cardiovascular system in various ways, including regulating blood pressure. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to shrink, increasing blood pressure and causing stress on the heart due to difficulties pumping blood. The protein also raises sodium and fluid levels in the body and rises blood pressure that way as well. Olmesartan medoxomil blocks angiotensin II which keeps blood flowing more easily throughout the body.

Benicar's Link To Intestinal Problems

The most severe of the side effects of Benicar is gastrointestinal injury. These intestinal problems resemble celiac disease, an allergy to wheat protein found in grains. Symptoms of celiac disease include stomach pain and discomfort, chronic diarrhea, and weight loss. If you are taking Benicar and you have experienced these symptoms, talk to your doctor immediately.

After your consultation, your doctor will typically test for celiac disease and if it is not positive, your conditions are likely villous atrophy and sprue-like enteropathy. Researches have found these symptoms only improve after patients cease taking Benicar.

As previously mentioned, Benicar may also cause a disorder called villous atrophy. This condition causes the intestinal lining to lose its texture, making it more difficult to absorb necessary nutrients. Villous atrophy eventually leads to digestive issues due to undernourishment. As a result, many victims seek medical treatment for dehydration, chronic diarrhea, and malnutrition and end up with expensive hospital bills.

Sprue-like enteropathy has similar symptoms to celiac disease such as severe, chronic diarrhea and substantial weight loss. This condition usually requires hospitalization as well. Again, the severe symptoms improved after patients stopped taking Benicar.

Unfortunately, many victims suffer from the symptoms listed above for months or even years. These patients lose an unhealthy amount of weight and are forced to see multiple physicians for their illness and face possible hospitalization.

Benicar Side Effects

Benicar side effects can be life-altering, often doing more harm than good. Apart from intestinal problems, other side effects of Benicar include:

• Abdominal pain

• Chest pain

• Angioedema (swelling of the skin)

• Hair loss

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Rash

• Liver impairment

• Arthritis

• Irregular heart beat

• Kidney problems, including failure

Though the side effects of Benicar listed above are severe, it is vital that you talk with your doctor before you stop taking any medications.

Millions of victims are coming forward to file a Benicar lawsuit against drug manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo. Benicar was put on the market for a full year before the U.S. FDA issued a warning that the medication could cause sprue-like enteropathy, upsetting the millions of Americans who were taking the drug.

Many victims are confused and do not even realize that their symptoms are caused by Benicar, and often mistake their conditions for celiac disease.

One of the very first people to file a Benicar lawsuit by the name of George Williams complained he stayed in the hospital for over 100 days because of Benicar. He developed cataracts and a compression fracture in his back due to Benicar and the various treatments that were intended to treat his chronic diarrhea. He now must use a feeding tube as a result of his digestive damage.
