Utilities Accidents

Public Utilities: Cause for Accidents

Public utilities use wires to bring us the services we need — electricity, phone, cable. These companies use pipes and gas lines to bring heat to our homes and businesses. These companies have a responsibility to assure those wires and the entire distribution network do not create safety hazards. Public utilities accidents can range from minor to catastrophic. When the injuries are serious, talk to a personal injury lawyer.

  • An overhead power line can be dangerous. Power lines are essential, but the electric utility has to take care to assure their lines are safe. Not enough height, not enough separation from other wires or too much sag in a line can create a dangerous situation. In a tragic accident, an electrical wire sagged onto a telephone wire, sent current through the telephone wire and electrocuted workers blocks away.
  • Falling or sagging wires cause accidents. Any utility wire can be dangerous if it crosses another wire (especially an electrical distribution wire) or snags trucks, backhoes and other equipment. Even a passerby can become entangled in a sagging or broken wire and suffer electrocution.
  • Safety should be a primary concern. Improper construction of poles can cause a deadly accident. Placing wires anywhere — over a roof, a backyard, a playground — requires care to prevent accidents. Utilities are responsible for making sure wires are not threatened by tree limbs and other hazards. An exploding transformer can be the result of improper installation or a manufacturing defect. A leaking gas line can could an explosion.
