Nursing home residents are often elderly and always vulnerable. Nursing homes often do not adequately train their staff, and sometimes put profit ahead of patient care. As a result, elder neglect can be the result.

The medical malpractice lawyers of Brindisi, Murad, Brindisi, Pearlman, Julian & Pertz in upstate New York have investigated nursing home neglect cases. We work with medical experts to determine if there was neglect and if that neglect caused serious injury or death.

  • Broken bones, especially hip fractures, can be a sign of physical abuse by staff or other residents. They can also be a sign that a resident has not been properly transferred from bed to chair to toilet or that bed rails have not been used when needed.
  • Bed sores (also referred to as decubitus ulcers) are caused by neglect — not moving a patient to prevent pressure. Bed sores can become infected and cause death.
  • Rather than monitor residents, some nursing homes use chemical restraints — medications that keep patients quiet.
  • When residents and exits are not monitored, wandering off may be a problem — a resident leaves the home and gets lost or falls or gets into an accident.
  • Malnutrition and dehydration are a common sign of neglect.
